CELL LINES and
MICROBIAL STOCKS
  • ATCC  American Type Culture Collection
  • Bacterial Culture Collections  Major Culture Collections of Bacteria with a Significant Internet Presence (listed by acronyms)
  • CABRI Common Access to Biological Resources and Information. The centres taking part in this project currently hold 26 collections covering most of the biodiversity: human and animal cells, bacteria, fungi, yeasts, plasmids, animal and plant viruses, DNA probes. The total holdings of their collections are nearly 140,000 deposits (90,000 of which are currently included in the catalogues), which represent approximately half of available deposits in Europe.
  • CLDB  Cell Line Data Base, contains detailed information on 4,671 human and animal cell lines that are available in many Italian laboratories and in some of the most important European cell banks and cell culture collections
  • Coriell Cell Repositories provide essential research reagents to the scientific community by establishing, verifying, maintaining, and distributing cells cultures and DNA derived from cell cultures
  • DSMZ  German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures DSMZ - Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to the acquisition, characterization and identification, preservation and distribution of Bacteria, Archaea, fungi, plasmids, phages, human and animal cell lines, plant cell cultures and plant viruses
  • ECACC  European Collection of Cell Cultures
  • HGCR Human Genetic Cell Repository, sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, supplies scientists with the materials for accelerating disease gene discovery. The resources available include highly-characterized, viable, and contaminant-free cell cultures and high quality, well-characterized DNA samples derived from these cultures
  • JCRB  Japanese Collection of Research Bioresources (used to be Japanese Cancer Research Resources Bank and HSRRB: Human Science Research Resources Bank)
  • NCCB Bacteria/Plasmids Database. This database contains data on about 3,500 mutant strains available from NCCB. They may or may not contain plasmids (natural or constructed). These plasmids are not used as cloning vectors, but are interesting because of the acquired phenotype of the host/plasmid combination (e.g. F plasmids, Col plasmids). The database also describes about 4,500 wild type strains available from NCCB and other collections cooperating in the NCC (Netherlands Culture Collections of Microorganisms).
  • NIH Stem Cell Information
  • WDCM WFCC-MIRCEN World Data Centre for Microorganisms provides a comprehensive directory of culture collections, databases on microbes and cell lines, and the gateway to biodiversity, molecular biology and genome projects.
  • WFCC World Federation for Culture Collections. The WFCC is a Multidisciplinary Commission of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) and a Federation within the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS). The WFCC is concerned with the collection, authentication, maintenance and distribution of cultures of microorganisms and cultured cells.

ENZYMES
see also section: Proteins
  • BRENDA  The Comprehensive Enzyme Information System from University of Cologne
  • Enzyme Nomenclature  ENZYME is a repository of information related to the nomenclature of enzymes. It is primarily based on the recommendations of the Nomenclature Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) and it describes each type of characterized enzyme for which an EC (Enzyme Commission) number has been assigned
  • REBASE  The Restriction Enzyme Database from NEB
  • Multiple Forms  Nomenclature of Multiple Forms of Enzymes (Iso-, Allelo-, Multi-) recommended by IUPAC-IUB Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature (CBN), 1976

CLONES and LIBRARIES
  • I.M.A.G.E. Consortium. The Integrated Molecular Analysis of Genomes and their Expression. The Consortium shares high-quality, arrayed cDNA libraries and places sequence, map, and expression data on the clones in these arrays into the public domain. Using this information, unique clones can be rearrayed to form a "master array" which will ultimately contain a representative cDNA from each and every gene in the genome under study. The human and mouse genomes are the first to be studied. Recently, rat, zebrafish, and Xenopus have been added. cDNA libraries from additional species will be added over time. All the clones are available free of any royalties, and may be used by anyone agreeing with the guidelines
  • CABRI Common Access to Biological Resources and Information. The total holdings of their collections are nearly 140,000 deposits (90,000 of which are currently included in the catalogues), which represent approximately half of available deposits in Europe.
  • HGMP-RC Biological Resources, clones and libraries of major model organisms, UK
  • BACPAC Resources Home Page at CHORI, Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute in Oakland, Ca., USA. This site contains information on currently available BAC and PAC genomic DNA libraries; high-density colony hybridization filters, and BAC and PAC cloning vectors. (organisms: human, rat, mice, hamster, zebrafish, baboon, chimpanzee, other vertebrates; Drosophila, silkworm, Trypanosoma, S. pombi, etc)

VECTORS

  • Cloning Vectors Collection, host -- E. coli, from the Department of Microbial Genetics at National Institute of Genetics, Japan -- a resource for the biological research community.  NB: no lambda phage vectors. Requests for vectors are accepted provided that they are used for basic research
  • Vector DB contains annotations and sequence information for many vectors commonly used in molecular biology. Information for more than 2600 vectors is available with search facilities. Vectors which are also in GenBank have direct links to that database via NCBI's Entrez browser!
